How to install Access2PDF on an independent report server

This tutorial is provided as a guide for those who wish to run Access2PDF on a computer separate from their web server. This procedure allows one to invoke the Access2PDF COM+ application from a network computer other than the one on which Access2PDF is installed.

For the purpose of this tutorial, we call the computer on which Access2PDF is installed the Report Server and the secondary computer as the Web Server.

Step 1. Install Access2PDF

Install Access2PDF on a network computer other than the Web Server, i.e. the Report Server, following the standard installation steps.

Step 2. Generate an Access2PDF Application Package

After installation and testing of Access2PDF complete, generate a remote installation package (a .MSI file) of Access2PDF as follows:

On the Report Server:

1. Open Administrator Tools via the Control Panel

2. Open Component Services

3. Select the local computer you are on (e.g., Console Root -> Component Services -> Computers -> My computer).

4. Expand the COM+ Applications folder

5. Right click on the Access2PDF application

6. Select Export… to open the COM Application Export Wizard and click Next

7. Provide a destination and file name for the package to be created

8. Choose the Export as: Application Proxy radio button (Note: For a web server running Windows XP select the COM+ 1.0 format). Click Next and then Click Finish.

Step 3. Install the Access2PDF Application Package on the Remote computer

On the Web Server computer:

1. Log on with an administrator account to the Web Server

2. Create another local administrator account on the web server using the same name and password that was used on the remote machine. This step is critical as it will allow the remote machine Access2PDF account to access the web server.

3. Copy the package (the .MSI file created in Step 2 above) to the Web Server

4. Install the Access2PDF remote installation package. To do so double-click on the .MSI file created in Step 2, or right-click on the file and select Install.

Step 4. Testing the Remote Installation

1. Copy the test web site from your remote machine to your web server. This will aid in the final testing of Access2PDF and act a sample for two parameters used with Access2PDF to accommodate the remote setup. That concludes the installation and configuration; however, two parameters must be modified. See the next step.

2. Note that the Access2PDF application requires 5 parameters (see documentation for all) and two (2) of these will need modification: PDF Path and Access file location.

3. When calling Access2PDF you must pass parameters to reflect operation on the remote computer: the path for the Access file and PDF folder location will most likely be on the web server, therefore you must share these locations and provide the UNC (Universal Naming Convention) path as if you were on the remote computer.

Example:

Computer A - Web Server

Computer B - Remote Access2PDF

Computer A Access file location parameter: \Machine NamePath

Computer A PDF folder location parameter: \Machine NamePath

Note: the share paths must be made accessible for the remote computer; having a user on both machines as local administrator will provide access from the remote to the web server.
